During the meeting...

What should you expect?

The following is a brief descripiton of a typical meeting at Comp-Talk:
5:00 PMThe Seargent At Arms will open the meeting and introduce the Chair for the evening.
5:01-5:14 PMThe Chair will introduce the theme of the evening and review the agenda for the meeting. Afterwards the Chair will introduce the Grammarian/Wordmaster, Timer, and Invocator who will each approach the lectern and describe their roles for the evening. The Chair will then turn the meeting over to the Toastmaster who will conduct the scheduled speech portion of the meeting.
5:14-6:00 PMThe Toastmaster will take control of the meeting and make a toast surrounding the theme of the evening. After the toast, the Toastmaster introduces the evening’s Speakers who will come up and perform usually a 5-7min speech (sometimes up to 20min) prepared from one of the many speaking manuals provided by Toastmasters International. After the Speakers, the Toastmaster will call to the podium the Evaluators who will each evaluate one of the speakers. Finally, the Toastmaster will close the speaking portion by introducing the Table Topics Master.
6:00-6:20 PMThe Table Topics Master (TTM) conducts this next portion of the meeting in which we practice our impromptu speaking skills. The TTM makes usually around 6 questions surrounding the theme of the evening and then calls upon members of the club randomly to come up and speak to the question for about 1-2 min. The TTM will then introduce the Table Topic Evaluators, one for the odd numbered speakers and one for the even. Finally, the TTM will call upon the club President to conduct the Business Meeting.
6:20-6:25 PMThe President holds the Business Meeting which deals with special announcements, and club news. This time is also an opportunity for members to bring forth motions that will affect the governing or operations of the club.
6:25-6:30 PMThe President turns the meeting back to the Chair who then calls upon the Grammarian/Wordmaster and Timer to get their reports on the evening. The Chair then calls upon the General Evaluator to give their opinion on the overall meeting. Sometimes a round table discussion is substituted for this role. The Chair wraps up the meeting by thanking the guests, reviewing next week’s agenda, and adjourning the meeting by striking the gavel.
